So thanks for sharing, Doctor Q.

AV (aka IRV) would be great if voters would vote sincerely instead of overcompromising for a "lesser-evil". But they do, and so AV shares FPTP's lesser-evil compromise problem.

A better and simpler voting system reform: Approval.

The voter can give, to each candidate, either an "Approved" rating or an "Unapproved" rating. In other words, the voter can give to any candidate either 1 point, or 0 points.

So Approval is a points rating system. It's big advantage is that, unlike AV (IRV), Approval never gives anyone any strategic reason to vote someone over their favorite. No one ever has any reason to not give the fullest support to their favorite.

In AV (IRV), a timid voter will often vote a lesser-evil compromise candidate in 1st place, instead of his/her favorite, in order to protect the compromise from immediate elimination, "to avoid wasting [his/her] vote."

That's the same problem that FPTP has. Approval doesn't have that problem.

Approval is much more simply and easily implemented than AV, and is easier to propose and enact, because it's only the most minimal (but powerful) change from FPTP.

In the last few months two of my friends went for their viva. One passed outright after a viva which lasted about one hour. One has fallen into a cateogry I had never really heard of before, they have a year to resubmit for a second viva. I don't mean major amendments, and I don't mean a fail. They made a statistical assumption which the external did not like. Their supervisor doesn't really know what happened there at all.

Anyway, I hope you pass outright, although I do know how exceptionally rare that is.

You could do a bioinformatics masters degree, they have one here at DMU. Although I have no idea how good it is. Genetics is the way forward, shame I hate working with it!

Well, Well, Well, I have hever had doubts about my Daughter and realise that all things have to be gone through

From reading "THE ENORMUS TURNIP at 18 MONTHS and I recorded it ,
to infants, when you were helping the other children to understand ther work to Patrol leader in the scouts.

To being a "MUSICAL DIRECTOR FOR THE KING"S LYNN AMATURE OPERACTIC SOCIETY AT 17 years old.

To high school with very high grades, running along that you achieved Grade 5 with " The Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music"

Learning to Drive, and passed FIRST TIME and

taken your andvanced driving test, sorting out the University you wanted to go.
Getting a 2.1 Master of Enginering.

Then the family life loosing your MUM and BROTHER fighting the berievment, whilst alone a university,

" DAD IS SO PROUD OF YOU and just loved to say go for it CLAIRE"

Best of luck with the Phd. "Go for it Claire"

Nice post. And I'm pleased that you still feel able to do your tiny bit of poly-activism by defending your choices and defending the fact that this kind of relationship is right for others, even if it's not for you: it would probably have been easier, in the medium-to-long term, to have simply said "yes, I made a mistake," even if it wasn't true... but you're doing something nobler, and that's admirable. Well done.

I met Jocelyn Bell Burnell the other month. She famously discovered pulsars, but the Nobel Prize for Physics went to her supervisor (who didn't actually do much), in what has sometimes been used as a criticism of the "one named recipient" policy of the Nobel Prize process, and slightly less-often been cited as an example of sexism in the sciences, especially in the 1960s.
