Mmm… Bacon

Well, my non-pig-eating days ended Saturday 24th July, exactly a month after I began. I had a bacon sandwich followed by pepperoni pizza.

As an experiment in self-control, it was pretty pathetic. After the first week it was the easiest thing in the world to remember, and didn’t prevent me from eating what I wanted for the majority of the time. It wasn’t really enough of a challenge, though I did meet it.

Ethical beliefs? Pigs are still rather a lot more stupid than humans, and as long as they aren’t aware of the system they are in (unlike slaves, for example) then I’m fine with killing them for food. Happy one minute, dead the next, what more does any being want? I care far more about the conditions in which animals are kept, whatever the reason they are kept, than whether or not we eat them.

Empathising: I did a bit of this, it was interesting to observe what I actually eat in such an objective way, and a bit strange to not just go “I fancy that, I’ll have it” every meal. I think that’s what I’ll take away from the experience — I have a slight idea now of what it’s like to constantly watch what you eat. I didn’t like it at first, then I got used to it, but I still prefer having more choice, despite my indecisiveness.
So, that was that then. What next?
