Friends Only: an actual discussion

OK, let’s start over. Let’s make this a place to discuss this calmly. If you’d like an argument, or a discussion, please comment below, especially if you feel you don’t fit into one of these groups, or if you’d like to tell the world your reasons for blogging or for having a friends only livejournal or equivalent. This time around I’ll try to listen.

Here are some points against Friends-only blogging (not just as opposed to open blogging, but as opposed to not blogging or alternate means of communication.)

Can’t Sleep

Hmm. I actually can’t. My heart beats at 120bpm, not really normal is that. I think it’s probably the cup of monster strong coffee I had at about 4pm. Normally I drink tea at work. Plus I hadn’t eaten much (well anything at all that stayed down) between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evening, owing to evil headaches. The light from the monitor burned my eyes when it first warmed up, but I’ve gotten used to it now. Dan’s fast asleep. He should be, after the 5 pints of Guinness/Brains Dark that he has this evening. He, Matt P and I enjoyed an evening of pubs, quiet yet excellent music, debating of philosophy, and playing pool. We spilt a pint of Brains on the floor of the Fountain Inn (Dan knocked it over with the butt of a snooker cue) but the landlord didn’t seem to mind, from the looks of it he was taking up the carpet, and then the flooring, anyway. How odd. I like the Fountain, we must go there more often.

Well, one stream-of-consciousness later, I’ve managed to extract a yawn out of meself, which must be a good sign, so I’m gonna attempt unconsciousness again.

edit: Now I’ve woken up at 8. I think it was all the alcohol-free becks I was drinking: it’s full of nitrogen or someshit. Any clues?

Dear future employer

I am writing to you in reference to JonA’s blog post on friends only blogs. I’d like to welcome you to read my blog, all of it, including the bits I’m embarrassed of and wrong about, because I’d like you to employ me for who I actually am, not what lies I tell you on my CV. (Not that I lie on my CV, but others do, and thus I am making a humourous point). I, too, cannot comprehend people wanting to hide what they have written from the world, and as a firm believer in free speech I am not going to censor my own writings.

I expect any employer to google my name, visit my website, read my blog and follow links therefrom, and use any means available to them to find out as much as they can about me. This makes it easier for employers and employees who are suited to one another, to find each other. To help you in your tedious task of data mining I have made no effort to hide any of my past from you, instead leaving it openly online for you to browse at your leisure.

Thank you for reading, I hope I will be an asset to your team.

Yours faithfully,

Claire Melton
